California: Governor Newsom slams Trump's "Con Job" fuel economy standards proposal
TelAve News/10882801
~ In response to President Trump's recent announcement proposing weaker fuel economy standards, California Governor Gavin Newsom has slammed the proposal as a "Con Job" that will harm consumers and the environment. The governor issued a statement today, calling out the president for handing his Big Oil donors exactly what they want.
Governor Newsom did not hold back in his criticism of Trump's proposal, stating that it will force Americans to spend billions more at the pump while also polluting the air in communities. He emphasized that this move is a clear indication of Trump's priorities, which prioritize profits for polluters over protecting consumers and the environment.
The governor also highlighted the real cost of Trump's proposed rollback. Fuel economy standards not only lead to significant savings for drivers by reducing trips to the pump, but they also have a positive impact on the environment. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that if these standards were implemented, American drivers would have saved $23 billion in fuel costs and reduced national fuel consumption by 70 billion gallons.

Furthermore, Governor Newsom pointed out that over the past 15 years, fuel economy improvements have saved households an average of $630-840 annually. And over the past two decades, these improvements have put over $9,000 back into consumers' pockets over the lifetime of an average new car sold in 2024.
Despite overwhelming support from Americans for fuel economy standards, with 96% saying it is at least somewhat important when considering a vehicle purchase or lease, Trump continues to do Big Oil's bidding. This move threatens decades of bipartisan progress in reducing air pollution and protecting public health.
Governor Newsom also highlighted California's climate leadership and its success in reducing greenhouse gas emissions while simultaneously growing its economy. He noted that since 2000, emissions have decreased by 21%, while GDP has increased by 81%. Additionally, California has set records for clean energy usage and has made significant investments in battery storage and clean electricity.

In other recent news, Governor Newsom and Attorney General Rob Bonta announced a new online portal to report misconduct by federal agents. This move aims to assist members of the public in sharing any instances of misconduct they may have experienced. The state is also celebrating the success of the California National Guard's Counter Drug Task Force, which helped seize 1.2 million illicit fentanyl pills in just 30 days.
Furthermore, Governor Newsom's strategy to create more water infrastructure continues with eight new projects across the state that will add 2.9 billion gallons of clean drinking water to California's supply. These projects will improve local water systems and ensure access to clean water for communities throughout the state.
As Governor Newsom continues to prioritize protecting consumers, the environment, and public health, these recent developments serve as a reminder of California's commitment to climate leadership and its residents' well-being.
