Canadian Muslims for Peace and Justice Condemns Attacks on Jewish-Owned Toronto Bakery

TelAve News/10902554
CALGARY, Alberta - TelAve -- Canadian Muslims for Peace and Justice (CMPJ) condemns the attacks on two Toronto locations of Kiva's Bagel Bar, a Jewish-owned bakery, discovered early Sunday morning, July 26.

Toronto police were called shortly after 8 a.m. to the Yonge Street and St. Clair Avenue West location, where a window had been struck by gunfire. About twenty minutes later, officers responded to a broken window at a second location near Bathurst Street and Steeles Avenue West, where no evidence of a firearm discharge was found. Police believe both incidents occurred overnight. No one was injured. The Toronto Police Service is treating both as suspected hate-motivated offences and is investigating whether they are connected.

"Someone fired a gun into a bakery because of who owns it. That is what happened here, and there is no softer way to describe it," said Dr Abdel Rahman, Chair of Canadian Muslims for Peace and Justice. "Our own members know what it is to wonder whether their mosque or their business is safe. We do not want another Canadian family to carry that worry, and we will not treat it as someone else's problem because the family is Jewish rather than Muslim."

CMPJ extends its support to the owners and staff of Kiva's Bagel Bar and to Toronto's Jewish community.

CMPJ asks the federal, provincial, and municipal governments to ensure the Toronto Police Service has the resources needed to identify those responsible, and to ensure that existing security funding for places of worship and community businesses reaches the communities at risk without administrative delay. CMPJ is prepared to work with Jewish community organisations in Toronto and elsewhere in Canada on any joint response they consider useful.
