City Council Approves Ordinance Prohibiting the Sale of Kratom in Idaho Falls

TelAve News/10897977
~ Idaho Falls City Council has taken a major step towards protecting public health and safety by approving an ordinance that prohibits the sale of kratom within city limits. The decision was made following a health advisory issued by the Bonneville County Coroner and extensive discussions and public input on the substance.

During a recent City Council work session, members reviewed the proposed ordinance and received information from local authorities, including the Bonneville County Sheriff's Office and Idaho Falls Police Department, about their concerns regarding kratom use and availability in the community. After considering this information and hearing from members of the public, the City Council voted to adopt the ordinance during their regular meeting.

Councilwoman Michelle Ziel-Dingman, who brought this issue forward, expressed her concerns about the serious health risks associated with kratom products. She also highlighted the lack of regulation by the State of Idaho, which has allowed these products to be sold without any age restrictions or consumer protections in convenience stores near schools.

Ziel-Dingman emphasized that it is the responsibility of Idaho Falls to protect its community, especially its youth. She stated that while kratom may still be available online and in surrounding areas, this ordinance sends a clear message about where the city stands on this drug. She believes that even if it saves one life or serves as a tool for educating the community, it will be worth it.

Kratom is a substance derived from a tropical tree native to Southeast Asia and is commonly sold in various forms such as powders, capsules, extracts, and beverages. The new ordinance will go into effect on July 1st of 2026. This grace period between adoption and implementation is intended to give businesses selling kratom products time to prepare for compliance. City staff will also work with local businesses to ensure they are aware of the new ordinance and have enough time to remove kratom products from their shelves before it takes effect.

For more information on the ordinance, the City Council meeting recording is available for viewing. The City of Idaho Falls is committed to protecting its citizens and will continue to take necessary steps to safeguard public health and safety.
