City of Boston Launches Coastmix
TelAve News/10909696
BOSTON ~ The City of Boston has launched Coastmix, an interactive website that lets users explore and design coastal protections against flooding from sea-level rise and storm surge.
The tool, available at coastmix.org, was developed by the city's Office of Climate Resilience and Office of Emerging Technology. Boston says it is intended to help residents and others understand coastal resilience options and take part in discussions about possible designs.
Users can build a mock coastal environment by adding or rearranging features such as vehicle lanes, bike lanes, sidewalks, berms, dunes, floodwalls and nature-based solutions. The site also offers preset waterfront examples and lets users test designs against projected flooding scenarios for 2030, 2050 or 2070. Designs can be downloaded and shared.

The city is developing coastal resilience plans for its 47-mile coastline. Coastmix is intended to help explain the design choices, space constraints and trade-offs involved in flood protection, according to the announcement.
"Our coastal resilience planning and implementation efforts have always involved community engagement and education, and the motivation to create Coastmix came from a desire to bring residents closer to the design process," said Catherine McCandless, a senior climate resilience project manager with the Office of Climate Resilience.
The platform uses an interface based on Streetmix, a civic planning tool. Michael Lawrence Evans, director of the Office of Emerging Technology, said Coastmix applies Streetmix's accessible approach to coastal resilience. Streetmix project lead Lou Huang said the organization was honored to work with Boston on the project.
The city will hold an online webinar about Coastmix on Nov. 6 from noon to 1 p.m. Eastern time. Residents can find a tutorial and submit designs to a community gallery at boston.gov/coastmix.
Coastmix's code is publicly available at github.com/OETBoston/Coastmix.
