EVANSVILLE, Ind. ~ The City of Evansville has taken a proactive step towards reducing localized flooding and protecting local waterways with the launch of their Adopt a Drain program. This initiative invites community members to play an active role in maintaining storm drains in their neighborhoods and workplaces by keeping them clear of debris.

According to Mayor Stephanie Terry, anyone can participate in the program by simply adopting a drain and keeping it free of leaves and trash. This small action not only strengthens the community but also helps protect the water quality that the city relies on.

Participants are asked to monitor their adopted drain at least once a month and keep track of the amount of debris collected. This information will be submitted through an online report every quarter, allowing the City to measure the cumulative impact of residents' efforts. For those who prefer not to use the online reporting system, paper forms are available upon request.

The City currently maintains around 9,000 drains each year by clearing sediment and trash from beneath the grates. However, leaves and debris often accumulate on the surface, causing blockages that can lead to flooding during heavy rain. Through Adopt a Drain, volunteers serve as an important first line of support by keeping the topside of storm drain grates free of buildup. This helps prevent pollutants from reaching the Ohio River.

City Engineer Brian Mundy explains that this program allows them to extend routine maintenance efforts by addressing issues that occur between scheduled service. Surface debris can accumulate quickly, especially during seasonal leaf drop or after storms. By having residents help keep the grates clear, it supports the overall function of the drainage network and reduces the chance of flooding and water pollution.

The Evansville Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) team spearheaded this program as part of their ongoing efforts to protect local waterways and reduce stormwater pollution.
