~ Evansville Mayor Stephanie Terry has announced the launch of the City's 2025 Safe Summer Initiatives, a series of events and programs aimed at keeping families safe, connected, and engaged throughout the summer. The first round of events will begin tonight and continue throughout the season, providing opportunities for fun, connection, and support in neighborhoods across the city.

According to Mayor Terry, these initiatives are not just about planning events but also about creating safer neighborhoods. She believes that when young people have access to positive spaces and strong role models, it reduces the risk of violence, isolation, and hopelessness. The Safe Summer program is focused on prevention, connection, and showing that every child matters and every neighborhood counts in Evansville.

The 2025 Safe Summer Initiative is part of the City's larger commitment to Youth Development, Public Safety, and Neighborhood Revitalization. It involves collaborative efforts with Parks and Recreation, the Evansville Police Department, and other local partners.

Among the first events in this initiative is "Need for Speed", a fun "Build Your Own Racecar" event for children hosted by staff from the Department of Parks & Recreation and the Children's Museum of Evansville at Lamasco Park on Friday May 30. This free event is part of the "As Seen at CMOE" series happening in various parks throughout Evansville this year.

Another exciting event is Movies in the Park on Friday May 30 at Bayard Park. Families are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs to enjoy a screening of The Little Rascals under the stars.

In addition to these events, two neighborhood pools – Rochelle Pool and Lorraine Pool – will officially open for the season on Saturday May 31. Unfortunately, due to a break in the circulation pump at Howell Mosby Pool, its opening has been delayed. However, repairs are underway and an opening date will be announced soon.

The Evansville Police Department is also getting involved in the Safe Summer program with their new initiative, Puppies and Police. This event invites community members and their furry friends to join officers at Kaycies Barkville at Woodmere on Monday June 2 from 9-11 a.m. It aims to promote positive community-police relationships in a relaxed, pet-friendly environment.

The EPD is also hosting Walking Wednesdays, where officers will be walking in different neighborhoods throughout the city every Wednesday during the summer. This week, they will be in the Alvord neighborhood at 10:00 a.m. Members of the public are encouraged to join them.

On Thursday June 6, there will be a Splash Into Summer Swimsuit Drive at Walmart East from 9 a.m. to noon. Donations of new swimsuits for children and adults of all sizes, as well as swim diapers, can also be dropped off at the CK Newsome Center anytime.

The City's commitment to neighborhood revitalization and clean public spaces will also be evident through the Parks Squad Cleanup on Wednesday June 12 at Garvin Park from 6-7 p.m. Volunteers of all ages are welcome to participate.

In addition to these events, the Evansville Police Department will be conducting periodic enforcement sweeps throughout the summer.

Mayor Terry believes that these Safe Summer initiatives reflect their belief that a vibrant city is one where every resident has access to fun, safe, and meaningful experiences. She encourages the entire community to come out and get involved in what makes Evansville special.
