City of Long Beach Activates Sandbag Distribution Sites Ahead of Impacts Related to Hurricane Rachel
TelAve News/10908521
Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach is opening sandbag distribution sites from Thursday, Oct. 8, through Tuesday, Oct. 13, as a precaution against possible coastal flooding, hazardous surf and showers associated with Hurricane Rachel, the city said.
The city urged residents, particularly those in low-lying areas such as the Peninsula and Alamitos Bay, to prepare for inclement weather. Potential showers and high winds could affect Long Beach from Saturday, Oct. 10, through Tuesday, according to the city.
Sand and sandbags will be available starting at 10 a.m. Thursday at Fire Station 7, 2295 Elm St.; Fire Station 12, 1199 E. Artesia Blvd.; Fire Station 13, 2475 Adriatic Ave.; and Fire Station 14, 5200 E. Eliot St. The Claremont Beach Parking Lot site, at 5400 E. Ocean Blvd., opened Sunday and is scheduled to remain open through Tuesday.
The city said empty sandbags are also available at all Long Beach Fire Department neighborhood stations. Supplies are limited to Long Beach residents, who must show identification and may collect up to 10 bags. Residents are advised to bring a shovel or other tool to fill them.

The National Weather Service issued a Coastal Flood Advisory in effect through 11 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, the city said. A southerly swell generated by Hurricane Rachel is expected to build through Wednesday and peak Thursday and Friday, with surf of 3 to 6 feet possible along south-facing beaches and dangerous rip currents.
Minor to moderate coastal flooding is likely during morning and evening high tides from Wednesday through Friday, with tides ranging from 6.5 to 7 feet, according to the city. The Alamitos Peninsula is among the areas most susceptible to shallow flooding, beach erosion and localized damage. Additional swell into the weekend could prolong elevated surf, rip-current hazards and coastal flooding, with morning high tides nearing 7 feet.
The city also said a major, long-lasting heat wave is expected to continue through at least Thursday, bringing dangerously hot temperatures.
Residents who fill sandbags are encouraged to store them for use during the winter storm season, in preparation for potentially severe El Niño conditions, the city said.
