Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach, CA - As temperatures continue to soar, Acting City Health Officer Dr. Cliff Okada has extended the heat alert through Monday, July 27. The National Weather Service is forecasting temperatures in the upper 80s to low 90s, with humidity making it feel as hot as 98 degrees and increasing the risk of heat-related illness.

Residents are urged to take precautions to stay safe in the heat. This includes limiting outdoor activities during peak heat hours (noon to 6 p.m.), choosing lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, and staying hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids.

To provide relief from the heat, designated cooling centers have been made available at City Parks, Recreation and Marine Community Centers and Long Beach Public Library locations during their normal business hours. However, residents are advised to contact these locations ahead of time to confirm their availability in case of unexpected closures.

In addition, five additional cooling centers will be activated on Sunday, July 26 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., which is forecasted to be the hottest day. These locations include El Dorado Park West Community Center, Long Beach Senior Center, Silverado Park Community Center, Doris Topsy-Elvord Community Center at Houghton Park, and Cal Rec Community Center at Ernest McBride Park.

For those who may need assistance beyond these designated cooling centers, the Long Beach Multi-Service Center will extend its standard hours on Monday, July 27 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. However, it should be noted that case management services will only be offered until 4 p.m.

While everyone is at risk for heat-related illnesses during extreme temperatures, older adults, individuals with chronic illnesses, infants and young children are particularly vulnerable. It is important for people to check on friends, family and neighbors who may be home-bound to ensure they are not affected by the heat.

To stay cool and protect against heat-related illnesses, the Health Department recommends wearing lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, limiting outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and staying hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. It is also important to apply sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher, wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses, and provide access to shade and water for pets.

Signs of heat-related illness include heavy sweating, cold and clammy skin, nausea and vomiting, dizziness, headache, and confusion. If a person's temperature rises to 103 degrees or above, they lose consciousness or experience a fast and strong pulse for more than an hour, it is important to seek medical help immediately.

While swimming pools may seem like a popular way to cool off during hot weather, it is crucial to provide entry-proof barriers around pools and spas and always supervise children near water.
