Colorado: Governor Polis Orders Flags to Fly at Half-Staff to Honor Heroic Wildland Fire Service Firefighter Who Died Fighting the Knowles Fire in Mesa County

DENVER ~ Denver - In a solemn and heartfelt gesture, Governor Polis has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff on Friday, July 31, 2026 to honor the life and sacrifice of a U.S. Wildland Fire Service firefighter. Nathan Matthews tragically passed away from injuries sustained while responding to the Knowles Fire in Mesa County, which later became known as the Snyder Fire.
Matthews was involved in a burnover event that resulted in the loss of three fellow firefighters - Emily Barker, Nick Hutcherson, and Sydney Watson. In recognition of his bravery and service, Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen has also ordered flags to be flown at half-staff on Saturday, August 1, 2026 - the day of Matthews' memorial.

The procession in honor of Matthews will begin at 7:30 a.m. MT on Friday, July 31 along the U.S. 6 and I-70 corridor. It will start at the Denver Federal Center and end at the Grand Junction Air Center. Coloradans are encouraged to safely view the procession from areas adjacent to the road and overpasses.
Governor Polis expressed his condolences for Matthews' family during this difficult time. He also acknowledged the bravery and sacrifice of all firefighters and first responders who put their lives on the line every day to protect communities and keep people safe.
"Nathan's heroism will not be forgotten," said Governor Polis. "We are forever in awe of Nathan's unwavering bravery and sacrifice." As Colorado mourns this tragic loss, let us remember to honor those who selflessly serve our communities every day.
