Colorado: Governor Polis Verbally Declares Disaster Emergency In Response to the Indian Creek Fire in Jackson County
TelAve News/10903034
DENVER ~ Denver, CO - In response to the ongoing Indian Creek Fire in Jackson County, Governor Polis has declared a disaster emergency today. The fire, which is currently estimated to be 15 acres and 0% contained, is burning in an area with heavy timber fuels at an elevation of 9,000 feet. Due to the specialized assets required to combat the fire, which exceed the county's capabilities, the Governor has taken action to activate the State Emergency Operations Plan.
Under this declaration, the Department of Public Safety and its Divisions of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHSEM) and Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC) will take responsibility for all response, recovery, and mitigation efforts on the Indian Creek Fire. This includes providing state and interagency engines and handcrews, as well as DFPC and interagency aviation resources. Incident management personnel and overhead will also be deployed to assist in managing the fire and containment efforts.

In addition to these resources, DFPC will also offer administrative and financial oversight for Jackson County and the incident. They will also provide intelligence products such as imaging, mapping, and fire behavior modeling to aid in firefighting efforts. DHSEM is directly supporting the Jackson County Emergency Manager by providing on-site area field managers at the emergency operations center.
The Governor's declaration also authorizes the National Guard to assist in response efforts. It also makes it easier for out-of-state licensed emergency medical providers to join in firefighting efforts. With this support from both state agencies and outside resources, officials hope to effectively combat the Indian Creek Fire before it causes any further damage or poses a threat to nearby communities.
