Colorado Springs: Bridge beam placements to impact 8th Street traffic starting Tuesday

TelAve News/10883777
~ Colorado Springs - Starting on Tuesday, Dec. 16, the eastbound frontage road from 8th Street to US Highway 24 will be closed for two months as crews work to install new steel beams on the 8th Street Bridge over Fountain Creek.

According to officials, the closure will begin at 6 a.m. and drivers will be detoured to US Highway 24, one block north. The closure is necessary for concrete work and is expected to last approximately two months.

However, the westbound frontage road from US Highway 24 to southbound 8th Street will remain open during this time.

On Wednesday, Dec. 17, there will also be a lane closure on the bridge itself. The right northbound lane will be closed from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. as crews work to install three large steel beams. Each beam measures 64 feet in length and weighs a whopping nine tons. The beams are scheduled to arrive around 7:30 a.m., with installation beginning shortly after.

Despite these closures and construction activities, access to local businesses will remain open and clearly visible for customers.

This beam installation marks a significant milestone in the project, which aims to add an additional northbound lane across the bridge and replace the Midland Trail bridge with an attached multi-use path. This phase of the project is expected to continue through early 2026.

During this time, the bridge will remain open in both directions; however, occasional lane closures should be expected.
