~ Colorado Springs, CO - South Academy Boulevard, a major thoroughfare in the city, will experience temporary closures and detours starting Friday, July 17. The closure is necessary for crews to install underground waterlines, pave the roadway, and install new striping.
According to city officials, the closure will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday and will last until noon on Monday, July 20. During this time, South Academy Boulevard will be closed between Hancock Expressway and Astrozon Boulevard. Motorists traveling northbound on South Academy Boulevard will be directed to take a detour west on Hancock Expressway, then north on Astrozon Boulevard before returning to South Academy Boulevard. While access to nearby businesses and properties will remain open during construction, travelers are advised to slow down and follow posted signs while also being mindful of workers and equipment in the area. Alternate routes are encouraged when possible as this schedule is subject to change depending on weather conditions.
The construction project also includes intermittent lane closures from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday; temporary pedestrian path and bus stop changes; relocated bus stops; construction activity near driveways; left turns where possible; business access maintenance throughout construction; and variable message boards providing traffic updates.
This project is part of the South Academy Boulevard Improvements Project which was approved by voters as part of the Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority. The project aims to improve safety, mobility, pedestrian access, and drainage along the corridor. This is the first major reconstruction of South Academy Boulevard since its opening in 1969.
