Colorado Springs: Trail and accessibility enhancements now complete in Bear Creek Cañon Park

TelAve News/10844346
~ Colorado Springs, CO - The City of Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department has announced the completion of trail improvements and maintenance work in Bear Creek Cañon Park. This project, located on the western edge of El Paso County's Bear Creek Regional Park, aims to provide valuable regional connectivity through the park to other nearby outdoor spaces.

The updated trails now offer a connection to Red Rock Canyon Open Space, North Cheyenne Cañon Park via Gold Camp Road and High Drive, as well as U.S. Forest Service lands. These improvements were made possible through the addition of over 4,700 feet of new trail, re-routing damaged and unsustainable sections, and reinforcing existing trails.

City staff and volunteers played a crucial role in completing these enhancements, contributing over 800 volunteer hours. The project also received support from various partners including the Rocky Mountain Field Institute (RMFI), the United States Navy, Colorado Springs Mountain Bike Association (COSMBA), and Medicine Wheel Trail Advocates.

One of the major benefits of these improvements is increased accessibility for individuals with disabilities through the El Paso County Parks & Community Services Trailability Program. This program utilizes "Terrain Hoppers" or off-road mobility vehicles to allow those with disabilities to experience trails that were previously inaccessible to them. The Trailability Program is available on a reservation basis at both Bear Creek and Fountain Creek Nature Centers.
