Colorado State Land Board Uses Clean Energy Partnership to Reduce Energy Costs and Emissions from State Buildings
TelAve News/10899767
DENVER ~ In a major move towards promoting renewable energy, the Colorado State Land Board has announced a partnership with Pivot Energy to enroll over 415,000 square feet of office buildings in community solar efforts. This initiative is in line with the state's clean energy goals and supports Governor Polis' commitment to a more sustainable, low-carbon future.
Under this partnership, 100 percent of the electricity for participating buildings will be sourced from renewable solar energy through the community solar model. This eliminates the need for on-site infrastructure and will result in cost savings and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
Governor Polis expressed his support for this collaboration, stating that it showcases how clean energy and cost reduction can go hand in hand. He believes that this partnership is a step towards achieving a 100 percent renewable future for all Coloradans.
Nicole Rosmarino, Director of the Colorado State Land Board, also praised the initiative as a practical and forward-looking solution to transition their commercial real estate holdings to clean energy. She emphasized that this move will not only reduce emissions but also support state clean energy goals and lower operating costs. Rosmarino added that by passing along cost savings, they are fulfilling their constitutional responsibilities towards Colorado's schoolchildren while contributing to a more sustainable future.

The partnership with Pivot Energy's community solar initiatives is expected to save the agency approximately 5 percent annually on utility costs, which amounts to an estimated $25,000 per year or over $250,000 over the next decade. This will also help meet state and local building performance standards.
The enrolled buildings include offices in Denver, Centennial, Louisville, and Golden – representing most of the State Land Board's commercial real estate portfolio. The selection was based on size and utility structure to ensure maximum participation and impact.
Unlike rooftop installations which were deemed too expensive for existing buildings, the community solar model allows the State Land Board to participate in large-scale solar generation facilities across the state. Through this partnership, the agency will sign up for a share of the community solar array's generating capacity, equivalent to their average monthly electricity consumption.

Jon Fitzpatrick, Chief Development Officer at Pivot Energy, expressed his pride in partnering with the State Land Board on this impactful initiative. He stated that their community solar projects are designed to expand access to clean energy, reduce costs, and support meaningful climate progress for Colorado communities.
This partnership also supports compliance with HB 21-1286, which requires large commercial buildings to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2026 and 2030.
By aligning financial performance with environmental responsibility, the State Land Board continues to demonstrate how public land management can contribute to both strong returns for beneficiaries and long-term sustainability outcomes. This partnership between the State Land Board and Pivot Energy is a significant step towards a cleaner and more sustainable future for Colorado.
