Columbia Fire Department responds to commercial structure fire, March 14
TelAve News/10890770
(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia Fire Department (CFD) companies were called to the City's Grissum Shop Building on Lakeview Avenue on Saturday morning after an automatic alarm was triggered at 8:47 a.m. The first company arrived within four minutes to find the large maintenance building locked and secured, with an audible fire alarm sounding and a fire suppression system actively flowing water to the sprinkler system.
Upon arrival, the first company upgraded the alarm and forced entry into the west side of the building. Inside, firefighters were met with heavy smoke and heat as they quickly began to stretch hoselines towards the source of the fire. Fortunately, no occupants were inside at the time and there were no reported injuries.
The fire was contained within 10 minutes thanks to the quick response of five fire companies with a total of 21 personnel. The firefighters also conducted a thorough search of the entire structure and took control of the suppression system.

According to Columbia Fire Marshals, an investigation is currently underway to determine the origin and cause of the fire. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of properly maintained fire alarm and suppression systems in commercial buildings. These systems are designed to detect fires early and slow their spread until firefighters can arrive.
It is important for people to understand that when one sprinkler head activates, it does not mean that all sprinklers will activate. In most cases, only those exposed to significant heat from the fire will operate. This targeted response helps control the fire, protect the building, and reduce danger for both occupants and firefighters.
The CFD urges all commercial building owners to regularly maintain their fire alarm and suppression systems in order to ensure their effectiveness in case of emergencies.
