Community Leaders Announce Landmark Legislation For Corporate Transparency & Economic Accountability

TelAve News/10852574
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - TelAve -- Advocates for economic justice and historical accountability are gathering to announce the introduction of HB1227, to create the Enslavement Era Disclosure and Redress Act, in the 104th Illinois General Assembly. This groundbreaking legislation mandates corporate transparency and economic responsibility for institutions that have historically benefited from slavery and the enslavement trade.

"This legislation is about transparency and fairness," said State Representative Sonya Harper, sponsor of the bill.  "For far too long, the economic impact of historical injustices has gone unaddressed. HB1227 ensures that companies doing business with Illinois operate with full disclosure of any past ties to the enslavement of African Americans and commit to economic redress measures that align with equitable business practices."

The bill requires companies and institutions seeking contracts with the State of Illinois to disclose any historical ties to slavery or the enslavement trade and take responsible steps to address these past injustices through meaningful economic commitments. The initiative aims to promote ethical business practices, support historically marginalized communities, and ensure Illinois remains a leader in economic justice and corporate responsibility.
