DOC Radio Launches WebXR Experience for VR Headsets, Bringing Internet Radio into Spatial Computing

TelAve News/10907929
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - TelAve -- DOC Radio has introduced a new WebXR mixed-reality experience that allows listeners to place a 3D virtual radio into their real-world surroundings while listening to DOC Radio through a compatible VR headset.

The project brings internet radio into the emerging world of spatial computing. Rather than replacing the listener's surroundings with a virtual environment, the WebXR application places an interactive 3D radio within the space around them, creating a spatial way to experience a live online radio station. DOC Radio believes the project may be one of the first WebXR mixed-reality experiences built around a live online radio station.

"We wanted to find a new way for people to experience DOC Radio," said Founder/CTO Mike Krack. "We've taken something familiar, the traditional tabletop radio, and brought it into mixed reality so listeners can place DOC Radio directly into their own surroundings."

The DOC Radio application currently features two virtual radio designs. The Vintage Radio is a classic tabletop radio featuring the DOC Radio logo, while the DOC Radio Cube is a modern design featuring the DOC Radio logo along with currently playing album artwork on each side.

Listeners can point at either radio and hold the controller trigger to move it around their room. The radio can be positioned on a table, shelf, or another desired location and left there as part of the listener's surroundings. A quick press of the trigger on the radio can stop or restart DOC Radio.

The application has been tested on Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest 3, PICO 4, and PICO 4 Ultra. DOC Radio is also interested in hearing from users who try the application on other XR platforms, including Apple Vision Pro, Samsung Galaxy XR, and the forthcoming PICO Space Pro.

DOC Radio is continuing development of the concept with a focus on allowing the virtual radio to better remain visible and active while listeners use other shared-space immersive applications, such as table tennis, billiards, virtual worlds, or other VR experiences.
