Florida: Governor Ron DeSantis Hosts Miami Roundtable in Support of Amendment 3 Property Tax Relief
TelAve News/10909803
~ Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis hosted a roundtable in Miami to promote Amendment 3, a proposed constitutional amendment that would expand homestead exemptions and create a path toward eliminating non-school property taxes on homesteaded properties.
DeSantis said property tax revenues across Florida's 67 counties have nearly doubled in seven years, rising from about $32 billion in 2019 to more than $60 billion today. He argued that local governments could reduce spending, noting that the state has reduced its budget for four consecutive years.
Amendment 3 would expand the homestead exemption for non-school property taxes, covering up to the first $150,000 of a home's value in 2027 and up to $250,000 in 2028, with future adjustments for inflation. It would also allow the Legislature to provide additional relief, potentially eliminating non-school property taxes on homesteaded properties.

The proposal would lower the annual assessment-increase cap for non-residential properties from 10% to 5% and require remaining property tax revenues to support public needs such as public safety, education, infrastructure and natural resources.
The governor's office said an average Miami-Dade homeowner with an assessed value of at least $250,000 could save about $2,500 annually once the proposal is fully implemented.
Miami-Dade County Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz endorsed the amendment, saying tax relief and public safety are not competing priorities. She said her office had reduced annual technology costs by $12 million without cutting services, through closer oversight and spending reviews.
The state's Department of Government Efficiency review identified nearly 67% growth in Miami-Dade County's general fund spending since fiscal year 2021 and nearly $140 million in potential budget reductions tied to what the state described as excessive or wasteful spending.
DeSantis' office said his administration has delivered nearly $10 billion in tax relief for families and businesses, including the repeal of the commercial rent tax, which it said saves small businesses about $2.7 billion annually.
