Fractional CMOs Reach the Factory Floor as Industrial Demand Climbs
TelAve News/10904196
Manufacturing output rose at a 4.7 percent annual rate last quarter, and fractional marketing leadership is reaching mid-size industrial companies for the first time.
ATLANTA - TelAve -- Atlanta, August 19, 2026. Manufacturing output grew at a 4.7 percent annual rate last quarter, according to the Federal Reserve's July industrial production report. Plants are hiring. Order books look healthier than they have in years. And a hiring model that used to belong to much larger companies is turning up in mid-size manufacturing: fractional marketing leadership.
Gartner forecasts that by 2027, more than 30 percent of midsize enterprises will retain at least one fractional executive. The fractional CFO came first. Operations and technology followed. Marketing arrived last, and for industrial companies that order says something.
"Marketing has always been the thinnest function on an industrial organizational chart," said Patricia Gunter, founder and fractional CMO at Duplia Marketing, who spent 25 years inside industrial organizations including Emerson and AMMEGA. "Finance has structure. Operations runs lean. Engineering is exact. Then marketing goes to whoever has availability. When the market is flat, a company can live with that. In a year like this one, it costs them orders."

Buyers of these services ask what separates a fractional executive from a consultant; quite a lot, in practice. Consultants examine a business, write up their findings, and move on to the next client. A fractional CMO takes a seat on the leadership team a few days a month, owns the strategy, directs the agencies and the internal team, and answers for the outcome.
"One arrangement ends with a report. The other stays until the results show up," Gunter said.
Cost is what changed the math for mid-market manufacturers. Salary.com lists the average CMO base salary at 373,722 dollars, an amount that a manufacturer doing $40 million in revenue is never going to sign. Fractional engagements in this space generally run 5,000 to 30,000 dollars a month, depending on scope, which puts executive marketing leadership within the budget of companies in the 10- to 250-million-dollar range.
The spending gap is wide to begin with. Many industrial companies still allocate only 1 to 2 percent of revenue to marketing, well below what consumer brands consider ordinary. Their customers, meanwhile, stopped waiting for the sales call: research from 6sense finds that B2B buyers are roughly 70 percent of the way through a purchase decision before they contact any vendor.

"The fundamentals never went anywhere. Product, price, place and promotion, aligned with the business strategy. That is still the whole job," Gunter said. "What changed is that a mid-size manufacturer can now afford the person who does the aligning. In a growth year, demand does not wait around. It goes to whoever was ready."
