Freight Base opens a fairer route to UK road freight capacity

New online marketplace gives freight forwarders free, unlimited job posting and helps vetted carriers cut empty running with built-in backload matching

LONDON - TelAve -- Freight Base, a new online marketplace connecting freight forwarders with vetted carriers, has launched to help address the growing demand for light-haulage capacity across the UK.

Changes in the movement of containerised freight since Brexit have seen more goods arrive directly through UK ports, increasing demand for direct van and light-haulage deliveries from port to destination. Freight Base aims to connect forwarders with reliable carriers while helping operators reduce empty running and improve margins.

The platform allows freight forwarders to post unlimited jobs free of charge, compare competitive quotes and review vehicle and service ratings before booking. Its route-matching tool also alerts carriers to suitable loads along planned journeys or near their destinations, helping them secure backloads and avoid unnecessary empty miles.

Every carrier is vetted before joining, with checks covering insurance, licences, identification, proof of address and right to work in the UK, followed by ongoing document monitoring and spot checks. Jobs can also specify requirements including tail lifts, temperature control, curtain sides, forklift access and ADR capability.

"Freight forwarders need a simpler way to reach quality carriers without eroding already tight margins," said Ian Nilsson-Forrest, Co-Founder and Director of Operations at Freight Base. "Ensuring a high level of trust between forwarders and carrier members is at the heart of what we do. That's the only way we can all flourish in a rapidly changing market, alongside rising overheads."

Freight forwarders can join and post jobs on Freight Base free of charge, with no monthly limit. Unlike platforms that require substantial upfront or per-vehicle fees, Freight Base offers carriers a low monthly fee and charges them only for the work they undertake through the platform, providing a cost-effective and flexible alternative.

"In an industry where freight forwarders often operate on very tight margins, the ability to post jobs on Freight Base for free is a game-changer," said Andrew Littlewood of Go 2Day Limited, one of the carriers already signed up to the platform. "It supports the bottom line by helping forwarders streamline operations without increasing overheads."

More than 200 carriers from established UK courier networks are already joining the platform ahead of launch. Freight Base is initially focused on UK same-day courier and light-haulage work, with plans to expand into refrigerated, chilled and frozen transport, ADR and other specialist services.
