ATLANTA ~ Mitsubishi Power Americas plans to invest $490 million to expand its Savannah Machinery Works in Chatham County, creating more than 220 jobs, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp announced.

The expansion will add 450,000 square feet to the facility near Pooler, at 1000 Pine Meadow Drive, where the company will manufacture gas turbine parts. Mitsubishi Power expects to hire for manufacturing, operations, heavy machinery and technician positions.

The company said the investment will expand its manufacturing capacity and workforce as demand for power grows. "This expansion strengthens American manufacturing and gives our people the advanced capabilities they need," said Bill Newsom, Mitsubishi Power Americas' president and CEO.

Mitsubishi Power is a power solutions brand of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, a Tokyo-based manufacturer with businesses in energy, infrastructure, transport, aerospace and defense.

Kemp said the expansion builds on the company's history in Georgia and followed discussions with Mitsubishi Power and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Tokyo. The governor's office did not provide a construction timeline.

Trip Tollison, president and CEO of the Savannah Economic Development Authority, called the project a major investment for the company and a source of new job opportunities for the community. He said the authority looks forward to a future groundbreaking ceremony.

The Georgia Department of Economic Development said its Global Commerce team worked on the project with the Savannah Economic Development Authority, Georgia Power and Georgia Quick Start.
