Georgia's Path2College 529 Plan Improvements Take Effect
TelAve News/10901346
ATLANTA ~ Atlanta - Governor Brian P. Kemp has announced two significant improvements to Georgia's Path2College 529 Plan, aimed at helping families save more effectively for future education expenses. These enhancements, which were signed into law by Governor Kemp in May, include an increase in the maximum account balance from $235,000 to $550,000 and a waiver of the state administrative fee by the Georgia Higher Education Savings Plan (GHESP) Board.
Governor Kemp emphasized the importance of these changes in ensuring that Georgia remains one of the top states for both quality and affordability of higher education. "By making it easier for parents to save for their child's college tuition, we are strengthening the future of our state and its economy," he stated.
The increase in the account balance limit will allow families to save more for education while also benefiting from the most affordable 529 plan in the country. Steve McCoy, Georgia's State Treasurer and administrator of the Path2College 529 Plan, expressed his support for these changes. "We are reinforcing our commitment to helping families meet their long-term education goals by increasing the account balance limit and waiving the state administrative fee," he said.

Path2College is Georgia's official 529 plan and offers families a range of benefits including a state income tax deduction, tax-deferred growth, and tax-free withdrawals when used for qualified education expenses. The funds can be used for various educational pathways such as traditional college programs, technical colleges, apprenticeship programs, K-12 tuition, and qualified education loan repayment. Individuals can open accounts for themselves or their loved ones with a variety of investment options available based on their savings timeline and risk preferences.
The GHESP Board oversees the Path2College 529 Plan and remains committed to providing accessibility, low costs, and strong long-term value for Georgia residents. In fact, in 2025 they were recognized by Morningstar for their exceptional leadership and dedication to serving education savers.
With these recent enhancements, the Path2College 529 Plan continues to be a valuable tool for Georgia families looking to save for their children's future education. Governor Kemp and the GHESP Board are confident that these changes will further strengthen the state's commitment to providing quality and affordable higher education opportunities.
