Governor Abbott Announces Over $3.3 million in Grants to East Texas Area Veteran Service Organizations

~ Governor Greg Abbott has announced that $3,307,000 in Funds for Veterans' Assistance (FVA) grants have been awarded to 13 organizations in the East Texas region. This is part of the Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) Grants Across Texas Tour and will provide services to an estimated more than 1,900 local veterans.
According to Governor Abbott, "Texas will always honor the sacrifices of our veterans and their families." He also stated that these grants will provide crucial services such as home modifications, financial assistance, clinical counseling, and more to the brave men and women who have served in the military.
Shawn Deabay, TVC Deputy Executive Director and Army veteran, expressed gratitude for the organizations in East Texas that support veterans and their families on a daily basis. He also noted that these grants will help strengthen their work and it is heartening to see the community giving back to those who have served.

The FVA grant recipients and their services include Andrews Center receiving $150,000 for Clinical Counseling; Camp County receiving $385,000 for Housing for Texas Heroes; Cass County receiving $400,000 for Financial Assistance and another $400,000 for Housing for Texas Heroes; Deep East TX Council of Governments & Economic Development Dist. receiving $198,000 for Financial Assistance; Disabled American Veterans of Texas Service Foundation receiving $93,000 for Pet Lodging and Veterinary Care; East Texas Council of Governments receiving $175,000 for Transportation Services; East Texas Veterans Community Council (CampV) receiving $200,000 for Financial Assistance; Habitat for Humanity of Smith County receiving $200,000 for Housing for Texas Heroes; Northeast Texas Habitat for Humanity receiving $200,000 for Housing for Texas Heroes; Polk County receiving $235,000 for Financial Assistance and another $100,000 for Housing for Texas Heroes; Tender Loving Care Center For Children receiving $200,000 or Financial Assistance; The Salvation Army – Lufkin receiving $82,000 for Financial Assistance; and Trinity County receiving $189,000 for Financial Assistance and another $100,000 for Housing for Texas Heroes.

In May, TVC Commissioners approved 190 grants totaling more than $40.8 million to 160 organizations across Texas. These grants are expected to provide direct services to over 125,600 veterans, their dependents, and surviving spouses throughout the state.
Since 2009 through the current 2026-2027 grant cycle, over $400 million in grant funding has been awarded through 1,790 FVA grants. These grants support a wide range of services including emergency financial assistance, transportation, legal services, family support services, home modification, and rental and mortgage assistance.
For veterans in need of assistance, they can find organizations providing help in their area and how to contact them at the Grant Services Directory. This is a valuable resource for those who have served our country and are in need of support.
