~ Governor Greg Abbott has announced the recipients of the 2026 Outstanding Women in Texas Government Awards, recognizing four exceptional women for their contributions to the state. This biennial award celebrates women in state service who are making a significant impact on the future of Texas through their talents and skills.
In a statement, Governor Abbott congratulated the winners and praised them for setting a high standard for future leaders in Texas. He also expressed his gratitude for their dedication to serving and inspiring others, as well as their efforts to make a positive difference in the lives of Texans. The Governor and his wife Cecilia are honored to have such remarkable leaders in their state as they work towards creating a more prosperous Texas for all.
The four recipients of the 2026 Outstanding Women in Texas Government Awards are Shunne Powell from the Teacher Retirement System of Texas for Leadership, Meredith Garcia from the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts for Professional Development, April Hernandez from the Texas Municipal Retirement System for Community Involvement, and Lorna Camacho from the Texas Department of Insurance for Rising Star.

Candidates were nominated by state agency leaders in four categories: Leadership, Professional Development, Community Involvement, and Rising Star. An independent committee then selected these four women based on their outstanding contributions that best exemplified each category.
The Governor's Commission for Women is responsible for promoting opportunities for women in Texas through outreach, education, research, and referral services. The State Agency Council also supports this mission by providing professional development training to its members.
