Governor Abbott Issues Disaster Declaration For Texas Severe Weather
TelAve News/10901249
~ In response to the ongoing severe storms and flash flooding in Texas, Governor Greg Abbott has directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to continue 24-hour operations at the Texas State Emergency Operations Center (SOC) at Level II. This escalated response level will provide support for the state's efforts to address the dangerous weather conditions.
The Governor has also issued a disaster declaration for 59 counties in Texas that are currently under threat from severe storms. This declaration allows for rapid deployment of state resources to assist local communities in need. As Governor Abbott stated, "The protection of Texans is my top priority." He urges all residents in affected areas to stay informed about local weather forecasts, avoid driving through flooded roads, and have emergency supplies ready.
According to the National Weather Service, heavy rainfall is expected across Southwest, Central, and Southeast Texas through the end of the week. This will increase the risk of flash flooding in these areas. The repeated rounds of rainfall over the same communities are expected to create dangerous conditions. Texans are advised to continue monitoring local weather forecasts and have emergency supplies readily available.

In preparation for potential emergencies, TDEM has requested that several member agencies of the Texas Emergency Management Council report to the SOC and ensure their resources are ready for deployment as needed. These agencies include the Texas Department of Transportation, Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service, Texas A&M Forest Service, Texas Department of State Health Services (Texas Emergency Medical Task Force), Texas Health and Human Services Commission, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Parks and Wildlife, Texas National Guard, and Texas Cyber Command.
Over the weekend, Governor Abbott took proactive measures by directing TDEM to activate state emergency response resources ahead of potential heavy rainfall and flash flooding threats. As these threats continue throughout the week, Texans are urged to stay informed about weather conditions and heed all warnings from local officials. Residents can find severe weather safety information at TexasReady.gov, check road conditions at DriveTexas.org, and access preparedness tips at tdem.texas.gov/prepare.
