Governor Ron DeSantis Announces Proposal to Protect Puppies in Florida

TelAve News/10882166
LOXAHATCHEE, Fla. ~ In a move to protect the well-being of puppies in Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis has announced a proposal in partnership with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. The state will be implementing standard practices to ensure ethical dog breeding, with the aim of cracking down on puppy mills and holding breeders accountable for any abuse or mistreatment of dogs.

Governor DeSantis stated, "In Florida, we will always fight to protect man's best friend." He went on to explain that the proposal will put an end to unethical puppy mills and help shelter dogs find loving homes.

The proposal includes several actions, such as establishing a hotline for reporting abuse by breeders and requiring pet stores to offer their space for local shelters to promote adoption before selling dogs from puppy mills. This will not only help save animals from being euthanized due to overcrowding in shelters but also discourage the support of unethical breeders.

Additionally, there are plans to develop legislation that would increase penalties for individuals who abuse or torture animals in front of minors. This is a crucial step towards ensuring that animals are treated with compassion and respect.

This announcement comes after Governor DeSantis signed two laws earlier this year - Trooper's Law and Dexter's Law. Trooper's Law was named after a dog who was abandoned during Hurricane Milton but was rescued by the Florida Highway Patrol. It is now considered a felony to abandon or restrain a dog during a state of emergency in Florida.

Dexter's Law was passed after a dog was brutally killed just days after being adopted. It includes a sentencing multiplier for anyone found guilty of torturing, mutilating, or killing a dog. Furthermore, a database has been created to keep track of individuals convicted of animal abuse so that shelters can prevent them from adopting pets.

The proposed measures have been welcomed by animal rights activists and organizations across the state. With these efforts, Florida is taking significant steps towards protecting the welfare of puppies and promoting ethical dog breeding practices.
