Governor Ron DeSantis Highlights More than $20 Billion Investment to Widen Florida's Turnpike and Improve Service Plazas
TelAve News/10908131
ORLANDO, Fla. ~ Florida officials have outlined more than $20 billion in planned and ongoing investments to widen the state's 320-mile Turnpike Mainline, alongside funding for service-plaza upgrades and additional truck parking.
The Florida Department of Transportation's plan calls for expanding every section of the mainline, which runs from South Florida to Interstate 75 in Wildwood, to at least six lanes. The work is expected to add more than 965 lane miles of capacity. The state says the initiative is 55% complete.
Gov. Ron DeSantis announced nearly $8.5 million for new food options, amenities and customer services at six Turnpike service plazas. The upgrades include renovated areas and refreshed vendors such as Jimmy John's, Zaxby's, Vending Oasis and Villa Pizza.

The state also plans to spend $53.8 million to expand and improve nearly 150 truck parking spaces at the Turkey Lake and Ocoee service plazas. FDOT said the additional spaces are intended to give commercial drivers more places to stop, eat and rest.
DeSantis said the investments are aimed at reducing congestion and improving roadways. FDOT Secretary Jared W. Perdue said the Turnpike connects residents to jobs, opportunities and communities.
FDOT said it has added 384 lane miles across the Turnpike System during DeSantis' administration, including 179 miles on the mainline. Recent projects include a section from State Road 50 in Clermont to Hancock Road in Minneola, which the release said was completed in June 2026, and a section from the Dolphin Expressway to Northwest 106th Street in Miami-Dade County, completed in February 2024. The next section, from Northwest 106th Street to I-75, recently opened to traffic, according to the release.
