~ Idaho Falls Zoo Opens New Islands Exhibit, Bringing Adventure and Education to Visitors

The wait is finally over for animal lovers and families in Idaho Falls as the Idaho Falls Zoo at Tautphaus Park officially opened its new Islands exhibit today. This highly anticipated addition to the zoo brings new animals, interactive learning experiences, and an adventure-filled playground for visitors of all ages.

Designed to offer something new and exciting around every corner, the Islands exhibit is home to some fascinating new animal species. Among them is the fossa, a unique mammal and Madagascar's largest carnivore. Visitors will also have the chance to meet the nene, the rarest goose in the world, which will be on exhibit starting next week after completing standard veterinary procedures.

But it's not just about new animals. The Islands exhibit also provides improved habitats for some of the zoo's existing residents. Ring-tailed lemurs, collared lemurs, Omar the Aldabra tortoise, white-faced whistling ducks, and various African bird species have been moved into their new homes within the exhibit. These habitats are designed around each animal's natural behaviors while also giving guests a chance to observe them from different perspectives.

"We're excited to finally open the doors and let our community experience Islands," said Idaho Falls Zoo Director David Pennock. "There are so many details to discover, from the animals and their habitats to the interactive experiences and playground. We think families are going to have a lot of fun exploring it and hopefully leave having learned something new."

And learning is a key aspect of this new exhibit. The habitat playground brings the Islands experience to life through play with features inspired by nature such as a climbing wall designed as a tree and a crawl-through tunnel shaped like an apple. Interactive elements throughout the exhibit invite visitors to discover how animals depend on essential resources like food, water, shelter, and space.

The Islands exhibit was made possible through the generosity of donors, sponsors, and community partners. The Islands exhibit and playground are now open and included with regular Zoo admission. Visitors can meet the newest animal residents from Madagascar hissing cockroaches to rosy boas and ball pythons. They can also explore their habitats while trying out interactive experiences or letting their kids loose on the new playground.
