BROOKLYN, N.Y. - TelAve -- NEW YORK — October 5, 2026 — Israfil Demir has spent years working at the grassroots level to strengthen the Turkish American community, promote civic engagement, support cultural connections, and build stronger relationships between Turkish Americans and the broader American society.
Rather than defining leadership solely through titles, Demir has focused on bringing people together, building relationships, and turning community needs into action.
His involvement in Turkish American civic life has included leadership and volunteer roles with the Turkish American National Steering Committee (TASC), youth organizations, business initiatives, and charitable programs. His work has included connecting Turkish Americans with elected officials, nonprofit organizations, community institutions, and leaders from different backgrounds.
Building a Voice for Turkish Americans
Civic engagement has been an important part of Demir's community work. He has participated in initiatives encouraging Turkish Americans to become more organized and active in American civic life while maintaining their cultural heritage.

In 2021, Demir publicly emphasized the importance of community unity and organized civic engagement during a controversy involving a Times Square advertisement. His approach reflected his belief that Turkish Americans can advocate effectively through participation, dialogue, and collective action.
Demir has also participated in meetings bringing together Turkish American representatives, elected officials, and Turkish and American leaders, including gatherings at the Turkish House in New York.
Connecting Generations and Cultures
Demir has emphasized encouraging young Turkish Americans to participate in American society while maintaining strong connections to their cultural heritage.
His community involvement has included cultural celebrations, civic programs, youth initiatives, community gatherings, and charitable activities.
In Paterson, New Jersey, Demir was involved in organizing a TASC community iftar attended by approximately 300 people, including local elected officials, Turkish diplomatic representatives, and members of different ethnic communities. The event created an opportunity for cultural exchange and community dialogue.
