L&D Leader Takes On Toxic Bosses With New Book and a Night of Anonymous Workplace Confessions
TelAve News/10910160
Sheila Joy Vance, MBA, celebrates the launch of "Bad Bosses: Managing Up and Protecting Your Sanity from Toxic Leadership" with a free, interactive event at Bakery Cowork in Atlanta on November 19
ATLANTA - TelAve -- Most people don't quit their jobs. They quit their bosses. Atlanta leadership development executive Sheila Joy Vance, MBA, wrote the book for everyone still stuck with one.
Bad Bosses: Managing Up and Protecting Your Sanity from Toxic Leadership publishes October 27, 2026. The book names four toxic boss types most workers will recognize on sight: The Micromanager, The Ghost, The Blamer and The Credit Thief. It gives readers word-for-word scripts for managing up, reflection questions and practical tools for protecting their careers without losing themselves.
Vance celebrates the launch on Thursday, November 19, at Bakery Cowork in Atlanta. The night is not a traditional book reading. Guests submit workplace questions anonymously, vote in live polls on real bad-boss scenarios, and leave with a personal plan for managing up in 2027. The event's rallying cry: Boss Up on Bad Bosses.
"Everyone has a bad boss story. Almost nobody gets to tell it out loud without risking their job," said Vance. "This night gives Atlanta professionals a safe room to ask the questions they can't ask at work, and real tools to take back on Monday."

The timing is pointed. As AI reshapes how work gets done, Vance argues that anxious managers fall back on the worst habits in the book. "AI didn't create bad bosses," she said. "It's just giving them more reasons to show up."
Vance draws on more than 15 years of enterprise learning and development experience at Amazon, TJX Companies, Target, ManpowerGroup and New Balance. She is the founder and CEO of Rebel Leader Lab, an Atlanta-based company that trains leaders to navigate AI-driven change.
