Long Beach: City to Host Community Engagement Sessions for Renaming of César Chávez Park
TelAve News/10910135
Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach will hold three community sessions and offer a survey to gather recommendations on renaming city assets and activities that recognize César Chávez.
The process follows news earlier this year regarding Chávez. The City Council directed staff to begin a review, and the Office of Equity formed an interdepartmental workgroup with staff from the City Manager's Office and the departments of Parks, Recreation and Marine; Health and Human Services; and Library, Arts & Culture.
The city said the sessions are intended to provide space for connection, reflection and healing, and to gather residents' experiences and recommendations. Feedback will inform recommendations presented to the City Council.
A virtual session is scheduled for Nov. 5 at 5:30 p.m. In-person sessions are planned for Nov. 7 at 10 a.m. at the Jenny Oropeza Community Center at César Chávez Park, 401 Golden Ave., and Nov. 18 at 7:30 p.m. at the Doris Topsy-Elvord Community Center at Houghton Park, 6301 Myrtle Ave.

Residents unable to attend can submit feedback through a survey available in English, Spanish, Khmer and Tagalog. Public computer labs at open Long Beach Public Library locations will be available to people with limited access to a computer or smartphone.
The review covers César E. Chávez Park, Drake Chavez Soccer Fields, Drake Chavez Greenbelt, Drake Chavez Connection and César Chávez Observance Day. Participants will also be asked to recommend who might replace Chávez in the Peacemakers' Mural.
Chávez Elementary School is a Long Beach Unified School District asset and will be renamed through a separate district process. The city's Office of Equity will work with the district, according to the city.
