Long Beach: The Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library Celebrates 10th Anniversary

Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach, CA - The Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library is gearing up to celebrate its 10th anniversary on September 12, 2026. The Long Beach Public Library has invited the community to join in on the festivities at the library located at 5870 Atlantic Ave. from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
According to Mayor Rex Richardson, the library has been a vital part of the community for the past decade, serving as a hub for learning, creativity, and connection. He expressed his excitement for the upcoming celebration and encouraged everyone to come out and celebrate the lasting impact of the library on North Long Beach.
The special anniversary celebration promises to be a fun-filled day for families with various activities planned throughout the afternoon. Guests can look forward to special story times and performances, hands-on activities, and creating commemorative items. It will be a time to reflect on the past ten years and celebrate all that the library has achieved in terms of providing a welcoming space for learning, connection, and discovery.

Cathy De Leon, Director of the Department of Library, Arts and Culture, emphasized that libraries are at their best when they reflect their communities. She praised the Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library for doing just that over the past decade and encouraged everyone to join in on this milestone celebration.
The event will feature several highlights including a performance by Sunshine Storyteller Ina Buckner-Barnette from noon to 1 p.m. All ages are welcome to join in on this lively performance where they can sing and dance along as stories about community, unity, and hope from around the world are shared.
Teenagers aged 13-18 can participate in Teen Sketch-n-Nibble from 12:30-2 p.m., where they can showcase their artistic skills while enjoying snacks. They will be asked to sketch their vision of what the Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library could look like in another ten years. The top three designs will receive prizes and be displayed at the library.
Adults aged 18 and older can get creative and design their own commemorative library tote bag from 1:30-3 p.m. using various decorating materials such as stamps, iron-on patches, sequins, rhinestones, and beads. Meanwhile, children aged 12 and under can decorate their own party hats from 2-3 p.m. with sequins, colors, streamers, and more.

In addition to these activities, there will be other special programs and commemorative items available for the whole family to enjoy throughout the celebration.
Since its opening in 2016, the Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library has been a valuable resource for residents of Long Beach. With its wide range of books, technology, educational resources, cultural programming, creative opportunities, and community services, it has become an integral part of the community. The library boasts a children's area, teen space, community meeting rooms, study areas and spaces designed to support lifelong learning and community connection.
The anniversary celebration is free and open to the public with free parking available on site.
