~ Madison Mayor Calls for Peaceful End to Intersection Occupation

Madison, WI- Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway has issued a statement thanking the community for their patience as the city works to reopen the intersection of Williamson Street and Baldwin Street. The intersection has been occupied by a group protesting police brutality and racial injustice since July 1st.

The mayor expressed her gratitude to the community for understanding the need to reopen the intersection while also ensuring that those who wish to visit a memorial at the site have space to do so. She acknowledged that there has been real harm done to local businesses and residents in the Marquette Neighborhood due to the occupation.

"We are hearing from neighbors who are losing income and even jobs, and who will not be able to make rent," said Mayor Rhodes-Conway. "We are also hearing from employees who are being laid off and businesses that are on the verge of closing permanently. Those who dismiss or downplay these concerns are not helping our cause; they are dividing our city at a time when we need to come together more than ever."

The group occupying the intersection has seen an increase in individuals experiencing homelessness joining their cause. In response, local elected officials, city staff, and community partners have taken steps to facilitate a peaceful transition of the space. Crisis counseling services have been provided on-site by mental health organizations, and efforts have been made to connect with vulnerable individuals experiencing homelessness.

The City's Community Development Division has also worked closely with street outreach agencies to secure short-term hotel accommodations for approximately 25-30 people, including families with children. However, some individuals have declined these offers.

Contrary to rumors circulating online, Mayor Rhodes-Conway clarified that the City has not provided porta-potties, dumpsters, or financial support for the occupation effort.

To ensure a peaceful resolution, Mayor Rhodes-Conway outlined simple next steps that include removing barricades and personal vehicles blocking the streets, relocating memorial items to allow traffic to move through the intersection, and ending food preparation in the area.

"As a city and country, we have much more work to do in addressing the systemic issues highlighted by this occupation," said Mayor Rhodes-Conway. "But it is also important to recognize that we have a foundation to build on in our community."

She highlighted initiatives such as the CARES program, which provides an alternative to police calls, and efforts to increase affordable housing and homeless services. The mayor also acknowledged the need for community oversight of the police and pledged to work cooperatively with individuals, nonprofits, and faith-based organizations towards a peaceful resolution.

In conclusion, Mayor Rhodes-Conway made it clear that the occupation of Williamson Street and Baldwin Street must end immediately. She urged all parties involved to come together in good faith for a peaceful resolution.
