Madison: Community Update from Mayor Rhodes-Conway
TelAve News/10902884
~ Madison, WI- The intersection of Williamson Street and Baldwin Street has been a hot spot for protests and demonstrations in recent weeks. However, according to Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway, what is happening at this location is not sustainable or safe.
In a press release issued on July 30, 2026, Mayor Rhodes-Conway expressed her concerns about the current situation at the intersection. She stated that there are immediate public safety and public health concerns that must not be ignored.
One of the main issues highlighted by the mayor is the lack of proper facilities for the large number of people gathering in the area. She pointed out that there are not enough bathrooms to support the crowd and all-day food preparation is taking place without proper refrigeration and sanitation measures.
The mayor also raised concerns about how blocking a street can impede emergency response from fire and EMS services. She emphasized that it is not safe for people to be sleeping in tents in the middle of city streets.

The situation at this intersection has also caused tension between protesters and residents of the Marquette neighborhood. Mayor Rhodes-Conway shared that she has received multiple complaints from both parties about being threatened and feeling unsafe.
Residents of the Marquette neighborhood have also expressed their frustrations with the ongoing protests. They have reported difficulties sleeping, conducting business, and safely moving around their neighborhood. The mayor stated that these residents are also seeking real change after the police shooting of Corey Ruiz but are losing patience with protest tactics that seem to be causing more division than unity.
In response to these concerns, city staff, local elected officials, and neighborhood leaders have been working together to address ongoing issues in the Marquette neighborhood. Their goal is to engage with residents, community organizers, and businesses to find a solution that prioritizes safety while remembering Corey Ruiz.
