CHICAGO ~ Chicago has launched a youth climate grant program offering $1,000 to $5,000 for projects led by residents ages 15 to 24, Mayor Brandon Johnson and the Chicago Department of Environment announced.
The Chicago Youth Climate Action Fund, supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies' Youth Climate Action Fund, will fund proposals addressing climate and environmental issues in Chicago communities. The department will work with young people and community partners to support projects from development through implementation.
The program is intended to advance the city's climate goals in areas including environmental justice, community health and preparedness, clean energy, sustainable transportation and waste reduction. Potential projects could include community gardens, recycling and composting initiatives, climate education, preparedness workshops and neighborhood biking events.

Projects must be led by at least two people ages 15 to 24. Applicants must apply in partnership with a sponsoring 501(c)(3) organization, and projects may serve one or more neighborhoods or be implemented citywide.
Applications are due Nov. 6, 2026. Applicants will be notified by Dec. 7, with grants expected to be distributed that month. Projects must be completed by April 15, 2027.
Johnson said the fund would give young Chicagoans an active role in addressing climate resilience and environmental justice. Angela Tovar, the city's chief sustainability officer and environment commissioner, said the program would help young people bring community-based ideas to their neighborhoods.
