Mesa: Falcon Field Airport Receives $1.7 Million in FAA Grants for Infrastructure and Safety Improvements
TelAve News/10909751
~ Falcon Field Airport received more than $1.7 million in Federal Aviation Administration grants for infrastructure and safety projects during fiscal year 2026-27, according to the airport.
More than $819,000 will go toward reconstructing the West Airport Service Road, which connects the airport's north and south sides. The airport said the route will allow authorized vehicles to travel between facilities without entering active aircraft movement areas. The FAA awarded $519,298 through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and $300,000 through its Airport Improvement Program.
A separate $823,243 Airport Improvement Program grant will fund a new taxiway connection near Runway 22L. The project will link an existing aircraft parking ramp to Taxiway D and prepare the area for a future aircraft holding bay, which would require additional funding.

According to the airport, the planned holding bay would give aircraft a designated place to conduct preflight engine run-up procedures before departure. The airport said the taxiway and holding-bay improvements were identified in its master plan and are expected to improve aircraft flow and reduce congestion during peak periods.
The FAA also awarded $67,742 to purchase and install 12 Vehicle Movement Area Transmitters in selected airport and Mesa Fire and Medical Department vehicles that operate on the airfield.
The transmitters will build on surface-awareness technology installed at Falcon Field in 2025, allowing air traffic controllers to better track equipped vehicles near runways and taxiways, the airport said. Falcon Field is among the first general aviation airports in the country to receive the technology through the FAA's Surface Awareness Initiative, a national effort to improve situational awareness and reduce the risk of ground-movement incidents.
