NAPERVILLE, Ill. ~ Naperville, Illinois - As the nation marks the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the City of Naperville is joining forces with Naperville Responds for Veterans to host an annual remembrance event. This event serves as a tribute to the victims and heroes of the attacks.

The remembrance will take place on Friday, Sept. 11 at 5 p.m. at the Cmdr. Dan Shanower Memorial, located behind the Naperville Municipal Center along the Riverwalk. The Naperville Municipal Band will kick off the event with music starting at 4:45 p.m. In case of inclement weather, the event will be moved to the Municipal Center City Council Chambers.

This year's keynote speaker is retired Marine Maj. Charles Lynn Lowder, a decorated Vietnam veteran and longtime resident of Naperville. Lowder is now a motivational speaker and co-founder and CEO of Veteran Business Project (VBP), a nonprofit organization that assists service members, veterans, and their spouses in pursuing small business ownership. He is also one of the owners of Rosie's Home Cookin' diner, where all profits go towards supporting VBP's mission.

The Cmdr. Dan Shanower Memorial was dedicated on Sept. 11, 2003 in honor of Cmdr. Shanower, a Navy officer and native of Naperville who lost his life in the attack on the Pentagon. It was one of the first memorials in the nation to pay tribute to those who lost their lives on that tragic day.

The remembrance event provides an opportunity for all to reflect on this significant moment in America's history and honor those who were affected by it - from those who lost their lives to their families, first responders, and survivors.

In addition to this event, two beams of light will shine behind the Naperville Municipal Center on Thursday evening (Sept. 10) to represent the Twin Towers that fell during the attacks. The lights will remain on from dusk on Sept. 10 until dawn on Sept. 11.
