ST. LOUIS - TelAve -- Following its acclaimed Broadway run, one of the most talked-about new American plays arrives in St. Louis. New Jewish Theatre (NJT) presents the St. Louis premiere of JOB by Max Wolf Friedlich, a riveting psychological thriller that explores truth, technology, identity, and the human cost of living online.

Jane's life unravels after a viral video places her on leave from one of the world's most powerful tech companies. What begins as a routine evaluation quickly becomes an intense psychological battle, forcing both characters and audiences to examine what it means to be a citizen of the internet and our obligation to help the people who need it most.

JOB arrives at a time when its questions feel more urgent than ever. "It speaks eloquently to our modern moment and the ways we engage with both technology and each other, while also being a highly absorbing psychological thriller," said Artistic Director Rebekah Scallet. "I expect the questions it raises to linger long after the curtain falls."

NJT's production is directed by Annamaria Pileggi, Professor of the Practice Emerita in the Performing Arts Department at Washington University in St. Louis, where she taught for more than 30 years. Pileggi previously directed NJT's production of Tuesdays with Morrie.

"At a time when the line between perception and reality is increasingly blurred, JOB challenges its audience to be the ultimate arbiter of truth," commented Pileggi. "The play offers no easy answers. Each audience member must decide what is real, what is truth, and accept the consequences of that ultimate decision."

Inspired by real-life experiences, Friedlich conceived the play after meeting a professional content moderator whose job required reviewing disturbing online content, revealing the often-unseen human cost behind today's internet. He also drew from his own experience writing for the fictional Instagram influencer Lil Miquela, giving him firsthand insight into the strange intersection of internet fame, anonymity, and identity.

JOB has had a remarkable journey from emerging play to Broadway success. After winning a prestigious playwriting competition, Friedlich teamed with producer Michael Herwitz to stage the play at New York's Soho Playhouse, where it sold out before previews ended. Production then moved to a larger Off-Broadway venue, extended its run because of overwhelming demand, and opened on Broadway in July 2024, continuing its sold-out success and earning widespread critical acclaim.

Mary Strauss generously sponsors NJT's 2026 Season. Dr. David and Melanie Alpers sponsor JOB.

JOB runs at the J's Wool Studio Theatre (2 Millstone Campus Drive, St. Louis, MO 63146) August 6-23. Performances are Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
