A Senate Campaign Without Donations: Engineer Brent Andrews Runs as a Maine Write-In

Licensed professional engineer says Mainers have more than two choices, and asks them to add him to their ranked-choice ballot
YORK, Maine - TelAve -- CAPE NEDDICK, Maine — Brent Andrews, a licensed professional engineer who lives in Cape Neddick, is running for U.S. Senate in Maine as an unaffiliated candidate. He is paying for his campaign himself and taking no donations at all.
"Somebody just kind of has to say this is enough," Andrews said. He believes the country is about to make decisions it cannot undo, and that a campaign can answer to voters instead of donors.
Andrews built his campaign around one idea: power belongs to the people, not to the parties or the money behind them. He believes humanity comes first, and that education, healthcare, transportation and a good job are rights, not privileges. His platform covers human rights, the cost of living, housing, heating costs, healthcare, addiction, Social Security, campaign finance, infrastructure, the environment, Maine's working waterfront, data centers and artificial intelligence, and international law.

He is taking no donations on purpose. "If this works, anybody can do this, and you don't need millions of dollars," Andrews said. His campaign will not send fundraising texts.
Maine uses ranked-choice voting for U.S. Senate, and the state allows a declared write-in candidate who registers with the state by the deadline to be ranked like any other candidate. Andrews is a declared write-in, so voters can write his name on the write-in line of their ballot and rank him alongside their usual choice. "You don't have to not vote for whoever you intend to vote for. You can just add me as a second," he said. Ranking him doesn't take a vote away from anyone else.
Andrews works as a field geotechnical and coastal engineer at a Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery. Earlier he managed the architectural and structural work on two public projects worth $200 million in Hawaii, and he managed field investigations and lab testing for Vermont's emergency road recovery after the 2023 floods. That work, he says, taught him that "when you don't spend the money on infrastructure, you lose the infrastructure to build the infrastructure."
