South Bend: City Celebrates Completion of Byers Softball Complex
TelAve News/10897963
~ South Bend, Indiana - The City of South Bend, along with state legislators and common council members, gathered on June 5, 2026 to celebrate the completion of the improvements at Byers Softball Complex. This project, which cost $3 million, was made possible by a $3 million state grant secured by Senator David Niezgodski and Senator Ryan Mishler.
The Byers Softball Complex, located on the southwest side of South Bend, has long been a popular destination for athletes and families. With the new upgrades, it is expected to become an even more attractive location for recreational opportunities and local athletics.
Mayor James Mueller expressed his excitement about the project, stating that "this state investment advances our commitment to quality parks and amenities across the city and reestablishes this premier softball destination for years to come."
The improvements to the complex include a modernized press box, concessions area, and operational facilities. All four main softball complex infields have been rebuilt, along with a full rebuild of the blue field. The irrigation and drainage systems have also been updated.

In addition to these upgrades, there is now a new entry plaza gateway, fencing, historical signage, shade structures, resurfaced parking lot and repaired concrete walks. A new monument sign has been installed at the main entrance and overgrown outfield shrubbery has been removed.
One of the most exciting additions to the complex is a new neighborhood splashpad with Life Floor® safety surface - the first of its kind in South Bend. This will provide a fun and safe water play area for children in the community.
The City worked closely with engineering firm DLZ to develop design plans for the facility as well as a master plan for future development. R. Yoder Construction was awarded the project's bid and worked diligently to bring the facility back to prime conditions.
With these improvements in place, it is expected that Byers Softball Complex will attract more tournaments and become a hub for local athletics. For those interested in schedules, league information, and tournaments, please visit southbendparks.sportsengine-prelive.com/.
