~ During Monday's Legislative Session, the Spokane City Council made a significant decision regarding local transportation. With a vote of 5-2, the council approved a new commercial parking tax that will be used to fund transportation system maintenance and safety improvements. This tax also aims to encourage efficient land use that aligns with the goals of the City's Comprehensive Plan.

Lisa Gardner, the City Council Communications Director, stated that this decision was made after careful consideration and feedback from various stakeholders. Council Member Paul Dillon expressed his appreciation for everyone's input on the matter. He also mentioned that the delayed implementation time will allow for further collaboration with stakeholders.

The approved commercial parking tax will have a rate of 12% (0.12). However, there are credits in place to reduce this rate for student and employee parking, as well as residential parking. The tax is set to go into effect on April 1, 2026.

This new tax is expected to generate much-needed revenue for infrastructure while also promoting more efficient land use in downtown Spokane. As Dillon pointed out, currently one-third of downtown space is used for car storage, and this ordinance aims to change that and build a more vibrant city.
