~ West College Street to See Busy Week with Revitalization Plan and Historical Survey
The week of June 22 is set to be a busy one for West College Street, as contractors and community members come together to work on the Route 66/College Street Revitalization Plan and a historical survey of the corridor.
Eocene Environmental Group, in collaboration with the City, is leading the efforts to develop a strategy for the revitalization of the Route 66/College Street corridor from Grant Avenue to Kansas Expressway. This will involve targeted redevelopment, environmental assessment, and community-driven planning.
To keep residents informed and involved in this process, Eocene and the City will be hosting a public meeting and open house on Monday, June 22 from 4-6 p.m. at the Midtown Carnegie Branch Library. The event will include two 10-minute presentations at 4 p.m. and 5 p.m., with the rest of the time being open for residents to come and go as they please.

In addition, on Tuesday, June 23 between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., Eocene will be conducting field work for their brownfields inventory along West College Street. This will involve teams walking the corridor, taking photos, and documenting site conditions from the right of way. The purpose of this field work is to identify potential opportunities and environmental considerations for future investment and revitalization along the corridor.
At the same time, Loggia Preservation will also be conducting an intensive-level historic resource survey of West College Street from Grant Avenue to Scenic Avenue/Chestnut Expressway. To gather information for this survey, a public meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday evening at Resurrection Church at 6:30 p.m. Residents and business owners are encouraged to attend this meeting to learn more about the survey process and share any photos or memories they may have of West College Street.

Following this meeting, the Loggia team will be conducting field work by both driving and walking the area to take notes and photos of the structures in the corridor. This will involve looking at each structure along the route and noting any historical significance based on materials used in construction. The ultimate goal of this survey is to document the architectural and historical significance of individual structures as well as the entire survey area, with a focus on determining eligibility for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places and local landmark designation.
Both Eocene and Loggia Preservation have assured that their team members will stay within the public right-of-way during their field work and will not trespass on private property. They are also happy to chat with curious residents who may have questions about their work.
For more information about the revitalization plan and historical survey, interested individuals can visit the designated website for additional details. With these efforts underway, West College Street is sure to see positive changes in the near future.
