~ Progress on the Jefferson Avenue Footbridge Rehabilitation Project has been moving swiftly this week, with significant developments taking place over the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) rail yard. The rehabilitated sections of the footbridge span have been successfully reinstalled, and the final middle section is set to be lifted into place on January 7th.

The ongoing project, which is expected to be completed in the spring, has reached a major milestone with the installation of the bridge span over the tracks. However, there is still work to be done before it can be fully utilized by pedestrians. Contractors will now shift their focus to touch-up paint, testing, and other necessary tasks that require BNSF track closures.

According to Nicholas Edelman, Public Works Project Manager, while the iconic bridge span is now in place, there is still a significant amount of construction left to be done. This includes installing the bridge decking and constructing access points on both the north and south sides of the bridge, which will include stairs and elevators.

The rehabilitation team has set their sights on a springtime reopening date for the footbridge. In collaboration with Commercial Street stakeholders, plans are also underway for a footbridge celebration as part of both the National Route 66 Centennial Kickoff and America's 250th Celebration.

The Jefferson Avenue Footbridge holds great significance for both locals and visitors alike as an iconic landmark in Springfield's Historic Commercial Street District. With its anticipated completion in the near future, it will once again serve as a vital connection for pedestrians in this bustling area of town.
