~ The Tacoma City Council is currently seeking individuals to fill four positions on the Human Rights Commission, according to a recent press release. The positions include three member positions and one Emerging Leader position, specifically for individuals between the ages of 16 and 24.

The Human Rights Commission is made up of fifteen members who serve three-year terms as representatives of the general public. This includes students, employer groups, the housing industry, labor organizations, religious groups, racial and ethnic groups, individuals with disabilities, and women's groups within the city.

The main responsibility of the Commission is to address community issues that may arise from discrimination based on various factors such as race, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran or military status, or disability. The City of Tacoma is dedicated to promoting an equitable and anti-racist community and aims for its committees, boards, and commissions to reflect the diversity of its residents. As such, all individuals are encouraged to apply for these vacancies including BIPOC individuals, LGBTQ+ individuals, those with disabilities, seniors, youth, immigrants and refugees.

Applicants who are appointed will be required to complete training on the Open Public Meetings Act and Public Records Act within 90 days of their appointment. This training will be provided by the Washington State Office of the Attorney General.
