~ Tacoma City Council Adopts Resolution to Address Homelessness in Pierce County

The Tacoma City Council has taken a significant step towards addressing homelessness in the region by adopting a resolution of intent to work with other Pierce County governments on a Unified Regional Approach (URA). The resolution was brought forward by District 2 Council Member Sarah Rumbaugh, with co-sponsors Mayor Anders Ibsen and District 4 Council Member Sandesh Sadalge.

According to Mayor Ibsen, the URA aims to bring together various Pierce County governments and agencies that have previously worked in isolation. He believes that this collaborative effort will be more effective in providing services and shelter for those experiencing homelessness.

Deputy Mayor Joe Bushnell also expressed his excitement about the partnership between Tacoma and other jurisdictions in creating a more coordinated regional approach. He believes that working together will allow them to make the most of their resources and better serve people throughout the community.

District 1 Council Member John Hines, who has been working on homelessness policy for years, emphasized that this is a regional challenge that cannot be solved by individual cities alone. He believes that the resolution is just the beginning and presents an opportunity to build a more coordinated, accountable, and effective response to homelessness.

Council Member Rumbaugh praised Pierce County for demonstrating leadership by investing in a unified regional approach to addressing homelessness. She also expressed her pride in Tacoma's commitment to this collaboration and hopes that more cities will join them in this endeavor.

Council Member Sadalge acknowledged Tacoma's efforts in tackling homelessness but stressed that they cannot do it alone. He believes that collaborating with other jurisdictions across Pierce County will allow them to serve their unhoused neighbors more effectively, efficiently, and compassionately.

The resolution directs City staff to work with other governments across Pierce County to develop an interlocal agreement (ILA). In the meantime, the City will continue its efforts towards addressing homelessness by developing data collection requirements for homeless service providers, connecting residents who are homeless or at risk of homelessness to resources, and supporting the establishment or expansion of at least one homeless intervention.
