Tacoma: Deputy Mayor Joe Bushnell Seeks Community Feedback on $20 Per Hour Minimum Wage Proposal

~ During the Tacoma City Council Economic Development Committee meeting today, Deputy Mayor Joe Bushnell led a discussion on the possibility of raising the minimum wage to $20 per hour. As the city continues to grow and evolve, Deputy Mayor Bushnell believes it is crucial to have a minimum wage that works for Tacoma.
"Cost of living remains one of the top concerns for our residents," stated Deputy Mayor Bushnell. "I am committed to thoroughly analyzing a minimum wage proposal that takes into account the diverse experiences and perspectives that make up Tacoma's economy. This includes hearing from as many people as possible on this issue."
The topic of fair wages has been an ongoing conversation among Tacoma residents, with discussions revolving around how it impacts workers, families, employers, and the overall health of the local economy. In order to gain a better understanding of these perspectives, Deputy Mayor Bushnell engaged with various stakeholders representing different sectors of Tacoma's community. This resulted in the creation of the Tacoma Minimum Wage Community and Stakeholder Engagement Report, which includes input from labor unions, nonprofits, local businesses, healthcare leaders, childcare providers, students, and members of the Tacoma Anchor Network.

During today's meeting, Deputy Mayor Bushnell presented this report to the Economic Development Committee. He is now working on developing an ordinance that will be brought before the full City Council for consideration in the fall.
