Technicolor's Mercedes Pastor: Service Provider Transformation Driven by New Tech, Business Models, Go-to-Market Tactics and "Thingification"
TelAve News/10486850
BARCELONA, Spain - Feb. 28, 2017 - TelAve -- MWC 2017 – Walking the halls of Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Mercedes Pastor, President of the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region for Technicolor Connected Home, observes that the event has evolved well beyond mobility to encompass emerging technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and new markets. In a podcast interview for journalists, Pastor notes that the increased coverage reflects the extreme transformation that is taking place in the network service provider in EMEA and around the world.
"There are four main areas where I see this transformation manifesting itself most dramatically. The first is how we access different services. To have an always-on service everywhere is becoming mandatory. The second big trend is how the industry brings new services into this environment: companies have to adapt very quickly and be faster to market. The third trend I see is that business models are changing very quickly. The fourth trend is related to 'thingification' — how the Internet of Things will change the service paradigm not only in the business environment, but also in the home," says Pastor.
Business models are changing particularly quickly.
"In the past, it was about connectivity. Now we see service providers shifting from a vertical business model to a horizontal one in which they must be able to deliver the full value chain to differentiate themselves in the market: not only connectivity but also producing and distributing content."

This industry-wide transformation is taking place as Technicolor, itself, marks the anniversary of its acquisition of Cisco Connected Devices division. The merged entity has turned Technicolor into one of the top players in the market today. The expanded Technicolor Connected Home business, says Pastor, is well placed to address this rapidly changing market.
"We have more capabilities for innovating. We can achieve shorter time to market. The size of the new company puts us in an excellent position to discuss the evolution of technologies and to engage with key partners in the sector for strategic projects," explains Pastor.
The integration has given Technicolor more scale, more capacity and access to more technologies.
"This means we can reach more customers and we can now cover any kind of discussion with service providers in terms of connectivity and the services evolution that has to happen in coming years to the home," says Pastor
Also, Technicolor has a unique advantage with its long history in the production of the video content, which is exactly what's driving much of the demand for broadband services in the home.
"Technicolor's vision covers the whole value chain from production to delivery of services in the home. That differentiates Technicolor in the market from other competitors that are also developing devices and services for the home. We are investing heavily in all the stages of the value chain so we can anticipate demand and be able to support service providers across the full value chain. We want to enable them to deliver these services as efficiently as possible."
