~ In a recent announcement, Governor Greg Abbott revealed that eight Texas colleges and universities will receive a total of $5.6 million in grants. These grants are part of the Nursing Innovation Grant Program (NIGP), which aims to support new and expanded projects that enhance nursing programs.

Governor Abbott emphasized the importance of investing in nursing education to build a strong healthcare workforce for the future. He stated, "Texas builds the healthcare workforce of tomorrow with strategic investments in nursing education." The grants will fund innovative programs that prepare more nurses for service in communities across the state, ultimately improving patient care and meeting the growing demand for skilled healthcare professionals.

Higher Education Commissioner Wynn Rosser also highlighted the significance of these grants in strengthening the infrastructure of education for nurses and other medical professionals. He stated, "Grants from the NIGP contribute to that framework by encouraging and funding new approaches and flexibility in existing programs."

The funded projects may include developing new competency-based nursing curricula, adding clinical sites or preceptors, or creating pathways in nursing education. The program also supports stackable credentials for multiple nursing roles, from certificates for nursing aides to baccalaureate degrees in nursing.

The NIGP was created by Governor Abbott and the Texas Legislature in 2023 to promote innovation in nursing education. Additional funding was provided in 2025 to further support this initiative. Eligible projects must align with Texas Board of Nursing Education regulations or seek approval for projects not covered by existing rules.

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board manages the NIGP, and the 2026 recipients will receive funding for a grant period beginning on September 1, 2026, and ending on August 31, 2028.

The eight colleges and universities receiving grants for the 2026-2028 period are Alamo Community College - San Antonio College, Austin Community College, Sam Houston State University, Tarrant County College District, Texas Women's University, The University of Houston, and The University of Texas - Austin. Each institution will receive varying amounts, with the highest grant being $750,000 awarded to Austin Community College.
