Texas: Governor Abbott Announces Major Southwest Airlines Expansion In Austin

~ Austin, Texas - Governor Greg Abbott, Southwest Airlines, and Austin Mayor Kirk Watson gathered at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) today to announce a major development for the state's economy. Southwest Airlines will be establishing a new pilot and flight attendant crew base in Austin, which is expected to create 2,000 jobs by mid-2027.
The expansion of Southwest Airlines in Texas has been made possible through a $14 million grant from the Texas Enterprise Fund (TEF). In addition, the company has also been offered a $375,000 Veteran Created Job Bonus. This investment by Southwest Airlines is seen as a significant step towards future operational growth in the state.
Governor Abbott expressed his excitement about the announcement, stating that Southwest Airlines has been an integral part of Texas' economic growth since its inception. He added that the addition of over 2,000 high-paying jobs in Texas is a testament to the state's status as the home of economic opportunity.

The new crew base will not only include pilots and flight attendants but also managerial and support staff who will support flight operations across Southwest's entire network. The average salary for these positions is expected to be $180,000 per year. The expansion will also involve building a station Command Center and a training facility for flight attendants to ensure ongoing safety and regulatory training.
Mayor Watson highlighted the benefits of this investment for Austinites, stating that it will provide good-paying jobs while strengthening the local economy. He also mentioned that part of the agreement includes investing in childcare and workforce development programs.
Senator Judith Zaffirini praised Southwest Airlines' decision to invest in Texas and create thousands of jobs. She also noted that this expansion reflects the state's leadership in aviation, economic development, and workforce training.
