~ Governor Greg Abbott has announced a series of directives aimed at strengthening workforce development in Texas and providing more opportunities for Texans to access high-demand, high-paying jobs. These directives, based on recommendations from the Texas Jobs Council, were announced during a press conference at the Governor's Mansion.

According to Governor Abbott, the demand for a highly skilled workforce has never been greater. In order to meet this demand and ensure that Texas has the best trained workforce in the country, he tasked the Texas Jobs Council with developing recommendations that could be implemented immediately through executive or agency action.

The council worked closely with four state agencies - the Texas Workforce Commission, Texas Education Agency, Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, and Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation - to develop a series of recommendations.

As a result of these recommendations, Governor Abbott has directed the following actions:

Texas Workforce Commission:

- Expansion of apprenticeship opportunities by identifying new apprenticeable occupations across various industries in Texas.

- Creation of a one-stop online hub for Texans to easily access all state career planning resources.

- Development of unified career pathways for individuals facing barriers to employment such as veterans, foster youth, and people with disabilities.

- Launching of digital Learning and Employment Records through the Tri-Agency Workforce Initiative to streamline connections between employers and jobseekers.

Texas Education Agency:

- Recruitment of more skilled trades professionals to teach high school Career and Technical Education courses by expanding local teaching permits and issuing clear guidance for school districts.

- Updating the list of approved industry certifications to better align with current workforce needs and high-demand jobs.

- Bringing hands-on "try the trades" experiences to rural and small school districts through expanded mobile STEM labs.

- Expansion of the Texas Regional Pathways Network statewide to increase access to workforce dual credit for high school students.

Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board:

- Promotion of careers in trades and other high-demand fields that do not require a bachelor's degree through a new "You Go to College for That" campaign on the My Texas Future platform.

- Addition of practical, self-paced career advising training for K-12 counselors and postsecondary advisors focused on high-demand jobs.

- Launching of new community college dashboards that provide campus leaders with better data on credentials of value and high-demand programs to boost student enrollment.

Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation:

- Review of age requirements to safely expand opportunities for younger Texans to enter apprenticeships, CTE programs, and licensed trades earlier.

- Waiving of renewal fees and reduction of continuing education requirements for over 20,000 CTE instructors, encouraging more skilled professionals to teach and train future licensed tradesmen.

- Allowing rigorous training experiences to count towards on-the-job experience requirements for faster paths to licensure while maintaining high standards.

- Expansion of onsite and remote licensing exam options to help Texans move more quickly from training into licensed careers.

These immediate actions demonstrate Texas' commitment to providing opportunities for economic growth and ensuring the success of every Texan in the state's booming economy.

The Governor was joined at the announcement by co-chairs of the Texas Jobs Council - Megan Mauro, interim president of the Texas Association of Business, and Brent Taylor, Southern Region vice president of the Teamsters - as well as other business and labor leaders and state officials.

The council will reconvene this fall to develop legislative recommendations for the 90th Legislature. A final report is expected in November 2026.
